We are conducting a study to validate an automated frailty score using electronic medical records (EMR) to improve how we identify and monitor frailty in older adults. Frailty is a key predictor of adverse outcomes in aging populations, and automated scoring can facilitate early detection and intervention.
We will assess adults aged 65 and older within the UMass system to:
- Verify the automated frailty score through medical record review;
- Evaluate how well the automated score aligns with clinician-assessed frailty; and
- Examine whether the automated score predicts important outcomes such as hospitalizations, falls, functional decline, and nursing home placement.
This project offers an excellent opportunity for students interested in aging research and clinical informatics to gain experience in EMR-based research, data collection, and data interpretation.
