Description
This is a four-week experience at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi. There will be a student-led research project at the hospital as well as clinical shadowing. Shadowing takes place in various surgical departments as well as the medical wards and pediatric wards, depending upon the interests of the students. We facilitate interactions with Malawian medical students and other trainees. We also spend a week at a school for orphans and vulnerable children doing health literacy teaching, basic health screening, and a service project.
Goals
1. Gain exposure to care of patients in a tertiary hospital in a resource-limited environment.
2. Participate in a research project focusing on socioeconomic impacts of road traffic accidents and a research project on furthering patient education to limit postoperative complications.
3. Teach health literacy and conduct health screening at an orphanage / school serving over 400 vulnerable children.
