Description
Four-week cultural immersion, clinical observership, and home-based medicine program conducted in collaboration with the Hallym University Medical Center in Seoul and Chuncheon, South Korea. The program includes a two-week observership at the Seoul campus, with opportunities to shadow specialties of interest including plastic and reconstructive surgery, burn care, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedic surgery, and rehabilitation medicine and engage closely with attending physicians and residents.

The remaining two weeks focus on understanding the structure of the Korean healthcare system and its public health approach to rural healthcare. Activities include participating in home health visits and visiting community health posts and public healthcare facilities. The program also includes contributing to a UMass research project exploring the expansion of home-based healthcare and improvements in remote patient monitoring for patients with chronic diseases.
Goals
1. Learn about the current state of home-based care in rural Korea;
2. Interview healthcare professionals and community practitioners; and
3. Develop recommendations for strengthening home-based care in rural communities.
