Description
The rising influx of immigrants and refugees in the Worcester community highlights the need for novel interventions to overcome barriers to delivering high quality healthcare to this population. Tasks such as obtaining laboratory work, imaging, or specialty care are not always intuitive, especially when the principles oppose ones in people’s native countries. This project aims to develop a comprehensive patient-facing resource on how to navigate the healthcare system geared towards people who have recently immigrated. For example, topics may include: obtaining medications, accessing lab work or imaging, scheduling specialty care appointments, and perinatal care. Each chapter will contain brief, step-by-step instructions and visuals outlining these processes in Massachusetts.
Goals
1. Eliciting feedback from immigration lawyers and community health workers we have identified to ensure cultural and linguistic humility. 2. Piloting the guide among a group of patients at Family Health Center of Worcester and leading focus groups with patients to integrate their feedback into a final draft. 3. Collaborate with certified medical interpreters at FHCW to translate the final guide into the five most common languages in Worcester.
