Description
Recent CDC and ACOG guidance emphasizes the importance of medical providers addressing pain associated with IUD insertion. However at UMass, counseling and pain management practices still vary across clinicians and clinics, with no standardized institutional guidelines for managing insertion pain.

In the first phase of this quality improvement project, our team surveyed UMass clinicians to characterize current practices and attitudes toward pain management during IUD insertion. We are now working with family medicine, OB/GYN, and adolescent medicine clinicians to develop more consistent approaches to patient counseling and pain management.

Please contact one of the Class of 2028 student members with questions about the project before reaching out to faculty.
Goals
Develop and refine a patient handout on IUD insertion and pain management options for use in UMass clinics. Work toward implementing workflows that support consistent counseling and pain management across participating clinics.
